3.6.42: Wiggle fixed
Jan. 19th, 2022 11:17 pmIt's been a few days; I built the stage a few days ago, but have been busy enough that I didn't have time to post. Sorry for the prolonged absence.
I mentioned in stage 40 that the mast was not actually secure, and could freely wobble between vertical (not tilted enough) and tilted too far. I said then that I thought it would end up being held in place with deck plates. Then, I didn't mention this in the last post, but as I built up the raised deck section around it, I was increasingly concerned that I'd maybe done something wrong and it wasn't meant to be loose. This stage allayed my fears, and fastened it in place in a clever and unexpected way.
Here's the mise-en-place photo.

I started by adding these two... things. I don't actually know what they are; I immediately recognized them as "those flat platforms on ship decks" and I think maybe they're hatch openings? But if you actually know what they are, please do tell me.

Then it was time to deal with that wobbly mast. I built some more supporting structures around it...

...and then I extended the mast slightly, and fastened it in place with technic pins inserted into these two red 1x1 bricks with holes in them.

Looking back at section 1, I guess I held that mast in place with a similar technique, but this was slightly more complex than that, and feels more clever for reasons I can't quite pin down. Also I like the fact that I built the raised structure first, and then pinned the mast base in place into it, as opposed to section one, where I pinned the mast into place in the substructure of the ship, and then built up the deck around it.
Next I added some more substructure.

I placed deck plates on top of the substructure.

Then I laid deck tiles on those plates.

I added a roof to the hallways on either side of the ship.

And placed railings around the back of the mast, along the edge of the raised deck section.

Then I built the beginnings of a third deck level, which will be level with the deck from the previous section.

I finished this stage off with these neat two-part deck plate sub-assemblies on each side of the ship. Here's part one...

...and part two.

And that's it for stage 42. Here's a wide shot of the finished stage.

Thanks as always for reading!
Discussion prompt: Have you abandoned a project for an extended period of time? How did you get back into it, when you went back (if you went back at all)?
