It's been a few days; I built the stage a few days ago, but have been busy enough that I didn't have time to post. Sorry for the prolonged absence.

I mentioned in stage 40 that the mast was not actually secure, and could freely wobble between vertical (not tilted enough) and tilted too far. I said then that I thought it would end up being held in place with deck plates. Then, I didn't mention this in the last post, but as I built up the raised deck section around it, I was increasingly concerned that I'd maybe done something wrong and it wasn't meant to be loose. This stage allayed my fears, and fastened it in place in a clever and unexpected way.

Here's the mise-en-place photo.

I started by adding these two... things. I don't actually know what they are; I immediately recognized them as "those flat platforms on ship decks" and I think maybe they're hatch openings? But if you actually know what they are, please do tell me.
Two 4x3 plates, covered in 1x4 tiles, sitting on the deck.

Then it was time to deal with that wobbly mast. I built some more supporting structures around it...
A bent piece with a tile placed vertically has been added directly behind the mast.
The bent piece has been surrounded by bricks.

...and then I extended the mast slightly, and fastened it in place with technic pins inserted into these two red 1x1 bricks with holes in them.
The mast has been extended as described.
Looking back at section 1, I guess I held that mast in place with a similar technique, but this was slightly more complex than that, and feels more clever for reasons I can't quite pin down. Also I like the fact that I built the raised structure first, and then pinned the mast base in place into it, as opposed to section one, where I pinned the mast into place in the substructure of the ship, and then built up the deck around it.

Next I added some more substructure.
Three sub-assemblies. Two of them are identical, 1x2 curved bricks sandwiched between 1x2 plates. The third is a 2x8 brick resting on top of two more 1x2 curved bricks, with some 2x2 plates double-stacked on top in a few places.
The sub-assemblies have been added to the ship, creating a scaffold on which to lay this section of deck plates and tiles.
Two more identical sub-assemblies, each of which is two 1x3 plates on top of three 1x2 plates with bent bars.
Those sub-assemblies have also been added to the sides of the build.

I placed deck plates on top of the substructure.
Bare deck plates have been added, level with the structure around the mast from a few photos ago.

Then I laid deck tiles on those plates.
The area around the mast has been covered in tiles and clips.
The wider section fore from the mast has had tan tiles and plates added.

I added a roof to the hallways on either side of the ship.
The sub-assemblies with bent bars from earlier are now supporting 1x8 plates with tiles on them.

And placed railings around the back of the mast, along the edge of the raised deck section.
A complicated zigzag of railings has been clipped into place in the clips near the mast.

Then I built the beginnings of a third deck level, which will be level with the deck from the previous section.
The forward-most part of this section now has substructure for an additional raised section of deck on top of part of the already-raised section.

I finished this stage off with these neat two-part deck plate sub-assemblies on each side of the ship. Here's part one...
Two 4x4 plates covered in tiles and clips, in mirror images of each other.
The mirror image deck plates have been added to the sides of the new raised section.

...and part two.
Two more mirror-image sub-assemblies, each of which consists of a 2x2 plate covered with a tile, with a clip extending out of one corner to make one edge three studs long instead of two.
The smaller deck sub-assemblies have been added closer to the center of the new raised deck section.

And that's it for stage 42. Here's a wide shot of the finished stage.
The forward section of the build, with all the work done in this stage visible.

Thanks as always for reading!
