We'll get to box two in a moment, but I want to pause here to address something that came up in a conversation outside of this blog and that I think is important. I'm enjoying this build, and I hope you're enjoying reading about it. And I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with commemorating the Titanic. But I do think it's important to acknowledge that the only reason the ship is still notable today is that 1,514 people were lost when the RMS Titanic sank in 1912. I don't know whether the build instructions will eventually address that; I hope they do, because leaving it unacknowledged felt to me like the difference between commemorating respectfully versus exploiting. I don't need to get into whether some of those deaths may have been preventable, or how the legacy of the tragedy affected maritime communications and safety protocols in the following years; those are interesting topics, and I encourage you to research them if you're curious, but this blog is about the Lego model, not the tragedy. But I also didn't want to leave it entirely unsaid. Thanks for reading this.

Box two starts with section three and stage 13, so I guess unlike the Falcon, the numbers are continuous throughout the build. I think I prefer this, though mostly it's just an interesting change. Section three is called Funnel & Main Cabins, though like with section two, this first stage is all below decks from any of that.
The intro to Section 3: "Here you will build another cross section of the ship, including some of its coal bunkers in the lowest decks, plus numerous cabins of various classes. The superstructure of this section contains the beginnings of the ship`s promenade decks as well as the skylight for the grand staircase and second funnel."

Here's the mise-en-place:
The mise-en-place photo for stage 13. There is only one small piece plate.
I like these early stages with a bunch of blocks. I do also like using plates and tiles to add detail, but there's something about building up a structure with Lego blocks that is tactilely (and maybe nostalgically) comforting in ways that detail work isn't.

I started by building a base, and then adding some internal supports.
A 14x24 base made of dark red plates with some white, grey, yellow, and black connectors.
Some bricks have been added to the base. Near the center, two hollow vertical frame pieces have been added, and at the front of the image, the base is covered in a row of 1x2 grate plates.
Those grates are going to be the floor of the coal bunkers.

Then I built this sub-assembly. Throughout building it, I had no idea what it was; it was only when I got to the end and recalled that this build is not minifig scale that I realized what I had built; it's a coal bunker. Those clip holders on the left are a ladder up to the scaffolding.
A 6x7 tiny-scale model of a coal bunker, made with mostly gray blocks. On the right are four 1x1 studs with clippable bars stacked on top of each other, leading up to a fend attached about halfway up the sub-assembly.
The coal bunker has been attached to the left side of the build.

I added more supports, including the beginnings of this half of the locking mechanism, which are the black semicircular plates that will link up with the brown ones from the grand staircase in box 1.
Next to the coal bunker and extending back into the build are three grey bricks, with plates sandwiched between them. At the front of the build, right next to the bunker, there are plates that will connect with similar plates from box 1`s build.

And the another coal bunker.
Another coal bunker has been added to the right side of the build. This one is slightly taller than the lefthand one, and the ladder goes all the way up to the top instead of stopping at the scaffolding, but it`s pretty similar outside of those specifics.

Finally I added more supports and the floor plates for the next deck up.
The build has been framed with 1-stud-wide strips, and the coal bunkers have been topped with plates.

I took more intermediary pictures that I didn't include here; if you want more details this week, it's worth checking out the Google Drive. I've also added a link to my profile page, in case you want to keep it handy; there's almost always at least a few photos I don't end up posting. It's also worth checking out the build instructions I linked to in 1.2.9; both boxes so far have started with some introductory trivia and photos that I didn't take pictures of.

Anyway. Thanks as always for reading!
