So, before we get into Legos today: I've been intentionally keeping this blog focused exclusively on Legos. As far as I knew, all of my readers know me in real life, and are familiar with other aspects of my personality, and I liked that this was (and will continue to be) a space with a narrow dedicated focus. But apparently the last post ended up in a list of recent posts on the front page, and stayed there for long enough to be discovered by at least one stranger who, based on their profile page, appears to be a right wing troll. This person actually left a very nice Lego-focused comment on my blog, but I have banned them from commenting given the content of their profile page (which I will not link to here). So given all that, and in case other strangers find this blog, outside of Discussion Prompts, I promise this will be the last and only time this blog strays from Lego, but I wanted to say:
  • Black Lives Matter.
  • Trans men are men, trans women are women, and non-binary genders are also equally valid.
  • Get vaccinated, and wear a mask in public.
I could go on, but I think you get the idea. If you disagree with any of those points, you are not welcome here, and I will delete your comments and ban you from commenting.

Right. Sorry about that diversion. Let's get back into the build, with a new section. I'm halfway through! So it's time to start on section four, Funnel & Compass.
The Section 4 Header in the build instructions, in English and French. The top of the Spanish translation is visible at the bottom of the photo. "This section includes a portion of the Titanic`s massive engine rooms and the elevated structure in the center that housed the main compass. It was elevated to ensure the least amount of interference from the massive amount of iron in the ship`s hull. There is also a small sub-assembly that represents a bench used by passengers enjoying the upper decks of the ship."
I'm fairly certain the bit about the bench sub-assembly was actually meant for Section 3, given the near-catastrophe it caused last time. This is just one of many minor errors I have found in the assembly instructions. I pointed out the first one back in box 1, but then mostly stopped mentioning them here. I think this may be the first time I've ever gotten a first-run Lego kit; I got the Falcon years after the set had been released, with plenty of time for them to release multiple production runs (and have multiple rounds of QA). I'm mildly surprised at the sheer number of errors that appear to have made it into the first run, but none of them have been build breaking or even done anything more than cause a few brief moments of confusion, so I haven't been bothered by them. I'm only pointing this one out because it's obvious, and it felt weird to not acknowledge it.

Mise-en-placeTwo small piece plates in this one, and lots of larger pieces as well.

Like the previous section, I started by building a base platform. It's interesting to notice the subtle differences between the two (e.g., on the previous one, the middle yellow brick through which the stand piece will fit was on the other side of the crossbar; here's it's on the same side as the other two).
A rectangular plate with a number of support elements on it, similar to the start of the last stage,

Next I added scaffolding and the top of the lowest deck.
Two elevated side-beams and a cross-beam have been added to support the decks above them.
The lowest deck above the engine rooms has six empty rooms, with light brown tile floors and grey doors.
The lowest deck above the engine room has six empty rooms, with light brown tiles for floors, and grey doors.
Unlike the previous sections, this lowest deck section is empty; I think this is eventually going to contain the removable engines, but not until box 3.

I added the next layer up.
This layer has four bedrooms, with the same light brown floors, white tile beds, and white doors.

Then I added some more structural elements, and that was it for this stage.
The build has been rotated so the visible rooms are facing away from us. The previous layer now has empty plates above it, and more scaffolding has been added to the rest of the build.
Those three technic pins are going to connect this section with section 3, once I get there.

There are a lot more intermediary progress photos in the Google Drive Album, in case you want to see them. Thanks as always for reading.
