Some housekeeping and 2.4.21
Dec. 9th, 2021 09:20 pmSo, before we get into Legos today: I've been intentionally keeping this blog focused exclusively on Legos. As far as I knew, all of my readers know me in real life, and are familiar with other aspects of my personality, and I liked that this was (and will continue to be) a space with a narrow dedicated focus. But apparently the last post ended up in a list of recent posts on the front page, and stayed there for long enough to be discovered by at least one stranger who, based on their profile page, appears to be a right wing troll. This person actually left a very nice Lego-focused comment on my blog, but I have banned them from commenting given the content of their profile page (which I will not link to here). So given all that, and in case other strangers find this blog, outside of Discussion Prompts, I promise this will be the last and only time this blog strays from Lego, but I wanted to say:
Right. Sorry about that diversion. Let's get back into the build, with a new section. I'm halfway through! So it's time to start on section four, Funnel & Compass.

I'm fairly certain the bit about the bench sub-assembly was actually meant for Section 3, given the near-catastrophe it caused last time. This is just one of many minor errors I have found in the assembly instructions. I pointed out the first one back in box 1, but then mostly stopped mentioning them here. I think this may be the first time I've ever gotten a first-run Lego kit; I got the Falcon years after the set had been released, with plenty of time for them to release multiple production runs (and have multiple rounds of QA). I'm mildly surprised at the sheer number of errors that appear to have made it into the first run, but none of them have been build breaking or even done anything more than cause a few brief moments of confusion, so I haven't been bothered by them. I'm only pointing this one out because it's obvious, and it felt weird to not acknowledge it.
Mise-en-place
Like the previous section, I started by building a base platform. It's interesting to notice the subtle differences between the two (e.g., on the previous one, the middle yellow brick through which the stand piece will fit was on the other side of the crossbar; here's it's on the same side as the other two).

Next I added scaffolding and the top of the lowest deck.

Unlike the previous sections, this lowest deck section is empty; I think this is eventually going to contain the removable engines, but not until box 3.
I added the next layer up.

Then I added some more structural elements, and that was it for this stage.

Those three technic pins are going to connect this section with section 3, once I get there.
There are a lot more intermediary progress photos in the Google Drive Album, in case you want to see them. Thanks as always for reading.
Discussion prompt: Tell me about a time when you had to (or just wanted to) stray from a project's scope to address a problem.
- Black Lives Matter.
- Trans men are men, trans women are women, and non-binary genders are also equally valid.
- Get vaccinated, and wear a mask in public.
